Živjo!
This is part two, of the previous article about the words “Kje” (Where), “Kam” (Where) and “Od kod” (From where)!
We will learn how to say which country / city are we from, which country / city are we going to, and in which country / city are we in at the moment.
Depending on if the country is a masculine noun or a feminine noun, the endings will be different when answering the Where and From where questions!
Let’s give some examples! 🙂
MASCULINE NOUN
Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia and it is a masculine noun!
Question: Kje si? (Where are you?)
Answer: Sem v Zagrebu. (I am in Zagreb.)
As I am sure you have noticed, we added the letter “u” at the end of the city’s name! Zagreb -> Zagrebu
Question: Od kod si? (Where are you from?)
Answer: Sem iz Zagreba. (I am from Zagreb.)
When answering the question Where are you from? (Od kod si?) we add the letter “a” at the end! Zagreb -> Zagreba
Question: Kam greš? (Where are you going?)
Answer: Grem v Zagreb. (I am going to Zagreb.)
In this case, the city’s name stays the same!
Another example: New York!
Od kod si? -> Sem iz New Yorka.
Kje si? -> Sem v New Yorku.
Kam greš? -> Grem v New York.
FEMININE NOUN
First example: Slovenia (Slovenija)
Where are you from? -> I am from Slovenia.
Od kod si? -> Sem iz Slovenije.
When answering Where are you from, for (most of) the feminine nouns we take the letter “a” at the end away, and change it with the letter “e”. Slovenija -> Slovenije
Where are you? -> I am in Slovenia.
Kje si? -> Sem v Sloveniji.
When answering Where we are, we change the letter “a” with “i”. Slovenija -> Sloveniji
Where are you going? -> I am going to Slovenia.
Kam greš? -> Grem v Slovenijo.
And when answering Where are we going to, we switch the letter “a” with the letter “o”.
Another example: Avstralija (Australia)
Od kod si? -> Sem iz Avstralije.
Kje si? -> Sem v Avstraliji.
Kam greš? -> Grem v Avstralijo.
So this is it for this quick lesson! It should be noted that this sometimes doesn’t work for all the country / city names, but it should work for most! 🙂
